In local news, the Hunger and Health Coalition raised more than 9,000 dollars on March 18th. According to the Watauga Democrat, the empty bowls event is held annually at Watauga High School and is organized through Watauga High School’s National Art Society. Participants at the event purchase a ticket which allows them to select a handmade bowl, their choice of soup provided by local restaurants, and a dessert. Many of the soup and dessert vendors were from local restaurants in Boone and the surrounding area. The event also featured a silent auction with items donated from various local businesses. In total, the empty bowls event raised 9,500 dollars for the Hunger and Health Coalition which seeks to provide fresh food and prescription medication access to members of the high country.
In state news, a Raleigh teacher and coach was arrested Tuesday on charges of sexual misconduct with a student. According to WRAL, Almando Kilpatrick Brown, a physical education teacher and assistant football coach, was charged with attempting a sex act with a student and taking indecent liberties with a student. According to the arrest warrant, both charges involve the same student at the high school with the incident supposedly occurring in January. Brown’s employment at the school ended on Friday. The state alleges that a month ago parents contacted Raleigh police about sexual conversations their daughter had with Brown and sexually explicit communications on Instagram. Brown is currently being held on a $50,000 bail.
In national news, surveillance video from a Virginia psychiatric facility shows seven sheriff’s deputies and three hospital employees piling on top of a 28-year-old Black man for 11 minutes until he stopped moving. According to NPR, a grand jury issued indictments on charges of second-degree murder against 10 people who were charged last week in the March 6 death of Irvo Otieno. The video shows sheriff’s deputies dragging a handcuffed and shirtless Otieno into a largely empty room in Central State Hospital with several small tables and placing him on some sort of seat. Several minutes later, the deputies moved Otieno to the floor and start to pile on top of him. Now to sports.
App State Baseball is heading into conference play. After winning the series at Marshall 2-1, the team will play their first home series against Georgia State looking to capitalize on the road series win. Every home series is going to be important to the mountaineers in order for them to keep up with a challenging sun belt conference. March Madness is in full swing, but the coach for Fairleigh Dickenson has already been promoted as a result the team’s performance. After the team became the second 16 seed to ever beat a 1 seed in the men’s college basketball tournament, coach Tobin Anderson agreed to a five year deal to coach for Iona, after their coach Rick Pitino left Iona for St John’s. He was a finalist for the Iona job back in 2020 before the gales picked Pitino, but he likely would not have gotten the job if Fairleigh Dickenson was unable to beat Purdue. Elsewhere in the tournament, some notable results include fifteen seeded Princeton making it to the sweet 16, top seeded Kansas losing to Arkansas in the second round, and only one ACC team, the Miami Hurricanes, making it to the sweet 16. In NFL news, Cam Newton is trying to make a comeback. The best quarterback in Carolina Panthers history will participate in Auburn’s pro day. He will throw to Auburn receivers looking to impress NFL scouts and make his way back into the league after missing the entire previous season.
