In local news, the Boone Police Department is warning the community about a scam involving Bitcoin ATMs. According to the Watauga Democrat, the premise behind the scams is tricking people into thinking their accounts were seized and that to access their money they would have to use the machines. The police department was made aware of this scam from a community member that was told to use the machine and was scammed out of thousands of dollars. Boone police are asking people to never give their information over the phone and to instead call their bank or the police department.
In state news, two men were hospitalized Tuesday after an explosion at a News and Observer recycling plant in Garner. According to WRAL, a 36-year-old man and a 46-year-old man suffered burns from the explosion and were taken to an area hospital to receive treatment. The two men were removing carpet from the floor before a chemical reaction at the plant triggered a flash fire. Authorities say the 36-year-old man had 80% burns across his body and the 46-year-old man had minor burns.
In national news, Louisville police released bodycam footage Tuesday from a shooting at a local bank the previous day. According to AP News, the bodycam footage shows two patrol officers responding to the shooting and were both wounded, with one of them being struck in the head. The shooter killed five people and wounded 8 more.
